FAQ

Q: What is your e-mail address?

A: It’s dg@duncanevans.co.uk

WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY

Q: I’m getting married soon, but we are using a register office not a church, can you cover it?

A: I’m happy to photograph you where ever you get married, regardless of time, place and custom and religion.

Q: Do you shoot traditional poses or lifestyle images?

A: Actually I do both, giving you a mix of styles, leaving it to you to decide how you want to use them. That said, if you want one particular style more than any other, let me know and that’s what I’ll shoot.

Q: Why is there a discount for days other than Saturday?

A: Simply because most people want to get married on Saturday. I offer a discount for any other day as Saturday is the premium day for weddings.

Q: How do we go about booking you?

A: Simply get in touch and let me know your plans and I’ll let you know if I’m free. If I am then we can discuss your specific requirements and location and if happy, we can book it.

Q: Do i need to place a deposit with a booking?

A: Yes, you do. For a Saturday wedding, you need to pay a 20%, non-returnable deposit when booking. For any other day, a 10% deposit is fine. The reason for this is to ensure that the booking is kept. Bookings are usually made months in advance, so a last minute cancellation is almost impossible to replace.

Q: What about the remainder of the fee?

A: That is due 7 days before the wedding takes place. If the fee is not paid by the day of the wedding, the booking contract is cancelled.

Q: You shoot digitally, are your photos printed on a home inkjet printer?

A: No, they are sent to a specialist lab in Derbyshire for superb quality results. Just because my service is affordable to everyone doesn’t mean i cut corners.

Q: Can we have a canvas done of our favourite shot?

A: Absolutely, pick which picture you like, and I will order the 36” x 24” canvas, with a 1.5” frame, for £85. There are other sizes available.

EDITORIAL QUESTIONS

Q: We need a review of a book/camera/software doing quickly. How fast can you do it?

A: Normally a 48 hour turnaround from receiving the review materials.

Q: I’m a book poublisher with a new range we need someone to write. You sound busy, can you do it?

A: Yes. The book world does tend to move slowly, then has bursts of rapid activity. It’s all about scheduling. I can discuss all publishing projects in complete confidence and agree terms and conditions as quickly as is required. By the end of 2006 I will have 12 photography books in print. I can write fast, accurate copy, to your specifications.

PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY QUESTIONS

Q: Whereabouts are you based?

A: I now live in the North Lincs/Humber region, allowing easy access to everywhere from York to Leeds, Sheffield, Doncaster and Lincoln.

Q: Do you shoot on film or digital?

A: I shoot primarily on digital because it produces a better quality image than 35mm and allows more flexibility in improving/cleaning up portraits. I use a Nikon D200 digital SLR with a range of lenses. However, I also shoot film on a medium format Mamiya RB67 for the highest definition possible, and can use this in preference to digital should it be required.

Q: You say you offer a mobile portrait service. What kind of quality does that offer?

A: Same as you would get in a London studio. I have studio lights with softboxes, snoots, barn doors, reflectors, umbrellas - it all packs down and is portable. I have a large studio backdrop with a train so that full length portraits can be taken, if you want that kind of formal background. That also collapses and is portable. The advantage is that some people find it difficult to relax in a town centre studio, don’t have the time to organise an entire family trip or are working during the day. The mobile studio comes to you, where ever you live.

Q: I am interested in having some portraits done, what portrait experience have you got?

A: Prior to moving to Shetland (am now back) I spent the previous five years in Essex and London, shooting portraits in my studio, the office studio, at cottage studios, and on location in London, Dublin, Italy, Yorkshire, Essex, Sussex, Gloucestershire. I’ve written endless articles about how to light portraits, how to shoot them, and of course, have written three books on portraits. I’ve also studied and written about shooting portraits in the style of Bailey, LaChapelle, Helmut Newton and in the classic eras of 20s, 30s and 40s Hollywood portraits.
